Veterinary Clinic Art

1. African Lion (Panthera leo)

Lions are one of the five big cats in the genus Panthera and a member of the family Felidae. One of several subspecies found in Africa, commonly referred to as African lions, is the type most often seen in zoos.

2. Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

The bottlenose dolphin is a warm-blooded marine mammal that lives in tropical and temperate oceans around the world.

Bottlenose dolphins have bigger brains than humans, and their brain-to-body-weight ratio is higher than great apes’. The human brain is heavier, but dolphins have more neurons.

3. California Sea Lion (Zalophus californianus)

California sea lions are known for their playfulness, noisy barking and intelligence. California sea lions are coastal animals found from Vancouver Island, British Columbia, to the southern tip of Baja California in Mexico.

Their brains are about the same size as chimpanzee brains, although they have some features in common with dog, cat, bear and weasel brains. Although their brain folds are more similar to those of whales and dolphins than other land mammals, scientists have noted that other similarities exist between these two groups of mammals.

4. Domestic Dog (Canis lupus familiaris)

The average dog’s brain is about the size of a tangerine. That means it doesn’t have as many folds as the human brain or the capacity for higher thinking. The human brain-to-body ratio is 1:40. In dogs, it is 1:125 across all breeds, according to Popular Science.

5. Florida Manatee (Trichechus manatus)

The Florida Manatee lives in coastal waters, bays, lagoons and estuaries in both fresh and salt water. It may prefer fresh water and congregate near hot springs or power plant discharge sites during colder months.

Its brain is about the size of a softball, with a relatively smooth surface compared to other mammals of similar size (cow, zebra, seal).

6. Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos)

The grizzly bear is a kind of brown bear. The term “grizzly bear” is usually used to refer to a smaller, lighter-colored bear that lives in inland areas and the term “brown bear” is usually used to refer to a larger, darker-colored bear that lives along the coast. They are both subspecies of the same species.

Grizzly bears are among the most intelligent land animals on earth. Their brains are larger than those of other land mammals their size and they rely on these brains for a number of behaviors.

7. Horse (Equus caballus)

The brain of the horse weighs between 1.5 and 2 pounds, about the same as a human child’s. But though it’s smaller, it has many similarities with our own brains.

8. Human (Homo sapiens)

The human brain is the command center for the human nervous system. It receives signals from the body’s sensory organs and outputs information to the muscles. The human brain has a similar structure to other mammalian brains, but on average it is larger than most other mammals’ brains: it is about three times as heavy as a dolphin’s brain and six times as heavy as an elephant’s brain.

9. Linnaeus’s two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus)

Named after the two curved claws on each of its limbs, this creature is a type of sloth. It spends much of its time hanging from trees, using large hairless pads on the feet and a highly adapted bone and muscle structure to support itself. Even dead sloths are known to retain their hold under a branch.

10. Polar Bear (Ursus maritimeus)

Polar bears are marine mammals, as they are adept swimmers. Their preferred habitat is on pack ice. They may swim as far as 65 kilometers across open water to reach land or ice. There are populations in Canada, Greenland, Alaska (USA), Russia.

Considered by many wildlife biologists to be one of the most intelligent land animals of North America, polar bears possess the largest and most convoluted brains relative to their size of any land mammal.

11. Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta)

Spotted hyenas, who are often characterized as foolish and dull, show signs of intelligence that rival most wild animals in Africa. In fact, the evolution of spotted hyena intelligence mimics that of humans, with success through complex social behaviors driving brain evolution.
