Every few months, I am invited to submit my comic work to the Bay Area zine, Come Find Out, founded by the sassy and wickedly awesome zine duo: Kelsey Westphal and Anjelica Colliard. The theme for the last one was Paradise and you can see my submission for the Paradise zine here.
For CFO’s twelfth installment, rather than a theme Kelsey and Anjelica focus more on the people who create the work (LADIES) and the work that they create (COMICS). Part of the reason why I love this zine so much is that Kelsey and Anjelica do such a great job at creating themes that are consistently challenging and fun as well as open-ended and structured. I’m a sucker for structure, what can I say?
Zines and self-publishing are incredibly important to give voices to creative individuals who are overwhelmingly ignored by mass media and main-stream publishing. Over the years, women have made incredible progress but are still largely invisible in the world of comics and in the creative arts in general. Regardless of the reasoning behind what I would consider a systematic silencing of the female voice in entertainment, I believe that for women to empower ourselves, we need to take conscious actions to uplift each other. LOCO does exactly that!
And if you’ve ever been a lady in a comic book store, you know that The Comic Book Gyyyyuuuyyy is REAL!
So for all the ladies out there who want to contribute a lil’ sumpin’ sumpin to the collective creative female spirit, here are the details: send all your comic submissions to ComeFindOut1934@gmail.com in .psd or .tiff format by March 4 2015. Maximum number of pages is 10, designed for half legal page size (8.5 x 7 inches)
Hot Diggity Dog THIS’LL BE A GAS!! Let’s make some comics ladies!
